MOGADISHU, Somalia, 26 May, 2020 – We, Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) express our grave concern by the use of detained Radio Hiigsi editor, Mohamed Abduwahaab Nuur Abuuja’s phone number to register with the IMO messaging application and the confiscation of his personal laptop.

On Sunday 24 May, around 3:06p.m local time, members of Abuuja’s family received notification messages with Mohamed Abuuja’s name indicating that Abuuja was back online.  Family members said when they called back nobody responded to their calls.

Officers from the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) first detained journalist Mohamed Abuuja on 29 February after writing critical on the behavior of the Somali security forces. He was released on 2 March without charges.  He was re-arrested on 7 March and has been held incommunicado since then without access to a lawyer and family.

According to the journalist’s father, Abduwahaab Nuur Mahdi, NISA officers confiscated his phone on the day of his arrest and visited the journalist’s home a week later to seize his laptop.

We, Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA), are extremely worried by the breach of journalist Mohamed Abuuja’s right to his privacy, we are also worried by the motive of those doing these actions. We strongly believe that journalist Mohamed Abuuja is not free and hence has no access to his phone.

We jointly demand the journalist be freed immediately and unconditionally or be brought at the Court with access to a lawyer.

We also wish to warn against all journalists, colleagues and family members to be vigilant against any possible communication from these accounts purportedly registered under Mohamed Abuuja’s name.

We also call for those holding Mohamed Abuuja to immediately speak and should explain who accessed the journalist’s phone and the reason they did it.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 22 May, 2020- Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and Somali Media Association (SOMA) jointly condemn the physical assault against SBC TV journalist, Abdullahi Mohamed Sheikh on Thursday by Hamar Jajab police commissioner and we express our concern by the measures to block the journalists from pursuing legal redress whenever they are assaulted by the police or government officials.

During a press conference in Mogadishu, SJS Secretary General, Abdalle Ahmed Mumin and SOMA Secretary General, Mohamed Abduwahab Abdullahi strongly condemned the move to summon journalist Abdullahi Sheikhdon and one other journalist who witnessed Thursday’s assault by the Mogadishu police on Thursday midnight in an attempt to frustrate the journalists’ quest for justice.

“We condemn the acts of violence against journalist Sheikhdon on Thursday in Mogadishu by a high ranking police officer, and also express our deep concern by the police attempts to deprive the journalists’ rights by pressuring and intimidating them in order not to seek legal remedy,” Abdalle Ahmed Mumin, SJS Secretary General said.

It is a worrying trend that police and state officials have continuously blocked and even forced to recant statements of complaints from journalists seeking justice for their rights against the police or the government officials.

It is the responsibility of the Somali Government to ensure that civil and human rights are preserved and protected for each individual including the right to access to justice regardless of their profession, and journalists are not exempted from seeking legal redress whenever they are assaulted by the police or state officials.

“We call for the police and the Attorney General to allow that complaint cases brought by journalists and media houses pass through proper legal procedures without any interference. Nobody is above the law. Even if the accused is a high ranking police officer, there must be fair treatment of justice,” Mohamed Abduwahab Abdullahi, the Secretary General of SOMA said.

MOGADISHU, Somalia, 20 May 2020 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) welcomes the statement on Tuesday 19 May, by Maria Arena, Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, on the continuous attacks on journalists and restrictions on media freedom in Somalia.

Journalists in Somalia who are indeed on the frontline in the fight against Covid-19 are now between hard and a rock place. This year alone two journalists (Abdiwali Ali Hassan and Said Yusuf Ali) were murdered and 26 others either physically assaulted or blocked by authorities in different places across the country since the beginning of 2020.

SJS welcomes the call by Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights to the Federal Government of Somalia to carry out a prompt, impartial, independent and thorough investigation into the killings of the journalists and to bring those responsible to justice. We also welcome the EU’s tribute to Somali journalists who risk their lives in the fight to freely exercise their profession and defend media freedom in this specifically difficult time of Covid-19.

“The Statement by Maria Arena, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights to highlight the risks faced by Somali journalists and to call for Somali authorities to investigate killings against journalists brings a grim of hope to the brave journalists who continuously risk their lives only to inform the public,” Abdalle Ahmed Mumin, the Secretary General of Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) said “We call for the authorities in Mogadishu and Hargeisa to immediately free imprisoned journalists Mohamed Abduwahaab (Abuuja), the editor of Radio Hiigsi who is held incommunicado  since March 7 in Mogadishu and Abdimalik Muse Oldon, a freelancer jailed since 17 April, 2019 in Hargeisa.”

In Mogadishu, earlier this week, Somali journalists and representatives from the media community protested against the continued violations including threats, harassment and intimidations by state officials against journalists and media houses in a time when the country is heading to national elections.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 19 May, 2020- The Somali media fraternity: Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) outrageously condemns the recent violations against journalists and the media in Mogadishu and Gedo region in the latest of string of violence targeting media professionals in Somalia.

Around 9:00p.m on Monday, armed NISA officers raided the premises of the privately-owned Somali Cable TV in Mogadishu. According to the affected journalists, three officers beat cameraman Abdirahman Omar Abdulle who sustained slight injuries on the left arm while threatening to shoot a reporter and a driver at the TV’s premises before leaving the area.  The reason of the raid is yet unclear and officers responsible were not arrested as of Tuesday midday.

Around 8:00p.m on Monday, a police commander and three officers from Hodan District Police Station stopped Som News TV reporter, Mohamed Abdi Osman and cameraman Abdifatah Mohamed Abdullahi who were on assignment to cover Covid-19 impact on the local business ahead of the upcoming Eid-al-Fitr celebrations. The officers told the journalists to stop filming nearby shops in the pretext of that business owners were not happy with the filming. When the journalists demanded explanation, the officers threatened that they will shoot if the journalists continue filming resulting the TV crew to leave and drop their assignment.

Around 3.30p.m on Monday, police officers in Beledhawo town of Gedo briefly detained freelance journalist Warsame Haji Farah after photographing Beledhawo city market on the aftermath of a gun clash within the Somali police force in Beledhawo on Monday.

Regrettably, these latest incidents occurred hours after the media fraternity expressed grave concern about the endless threats against the media professionals working in the country and the total impunity enjoyed by those committing these violations.

While, we jointly condemn these latest violations, we also demand for a prompt investigation into the attack on Somali Cable TV premises on Monday and we call for the Somali police to permit unhindered access to all journalists to carry out their duties without harassment.

Meanwhile, the Somali media fraternity on Monday condemned the continued enforced disappearance against Radio Hiigsi editor, Mohamed Abduwahaab Nuur (Abuuja) since 7th March in Mogadishu as we call for his freedom or be brought to a court of law with access to a lawyer.

JOINT STATEMENT: Somali Media Fraternity Condemns Fake Scam Invoices Pretending to be from Independent Media Houses

0

MOGADISHU, Somalia 12 May, 2020 – Somali media fraternity: Somali Media Association (SOMA), Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA), Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) and Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) express their dismay by the recurrent incidents where some Somali government officials have faked invoices carrying logos of certain independent media houses to scam funds from international organizations, who are involved in the fight against Covid-19 in Somalia.

Following a meeting in Mogadishu on Monday 11 May, representative organizations of local media stations – which represent more than 50 media houses across Somalia – have expressed their concern that their media stations were targeted with fraudulent invoices with the aim to divert funds allocated for Covid-19 media awareness messages while these media houses have voluntarily disseminated public service announcement messages without charge.

We are concerned that these fraudulent actions have now posed new threats- not only financially but also security wise- to the media houses and their journalists as their brand names and addresses were illegally used.

We call for the Somali Federal Government to immediately launch investigation into this new trend of threats and take appropriate actions against individuals involved.

We applaud the courageous role played by the Somali local media houses during this critical time of Covid-19 including the media and journalists’ role of raising awareness and dissemination of WHO-approved health awareness to change public attitudes and behaviors towards Covid-19 in Somalia.

MOGADISHU, Somalia, 04 may, 2020 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA), strongly condemn the killing of Kalsan TV journalist, Said Yusuf Ali who was stabbed to death in Mogadishu on Monday 04 May, 2020.

According to family and colleagues, a knife wielding man attacked and stabbed the journalist four times outside a shop in Sey Biyano neighborhood in Mogadishu’s Hodan district around 7.30p.m local time.  He died on spot and the body was taken to the hospital.

“He covered a story on the murder of a school teacher in Afgoye on Monday before he left the TV to his home at 2.p.m,” said Mowlid Mohamed Urur, the director of Kalsan TV, a privately owned television where Said Yusuf Ali worked.

Late Said Yusuf Ali, who was in his 30s, has left two sons and an expectant wife.

Police have told local media that they hold the killer at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

We, the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), Somali Media Association (SOMA) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA), condemn the murder of our colleague journalist Said Yusuf Ali and send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and the entire Somali journalists.

This murder is the latest in a series of attacks against journalists and media professionals in Somalia. The killing comes against a backdrop of rising threats, intimidations and harassment by the Somali government. It is extremely worrying that almost all of the attacks against Somali journalists have gone unpunished.

We call for the Somali government to take urgent action including investigating the perpetrators to ascertain the motive of our colleague’s killing.

On World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, we, the Somali media fraternity called for the authorities to end the violence and threats on the journalists and through our lawyer, submitted an official protest letter that documented key violations against press freedom to the Offices of Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmaajo), Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Khaire and Minister of Information, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye).

Somali Media Fraternity Condemns Assault Against Female Journalist and a Cameraman in Mogadishu

0

MOGADISHU, Somalia 04 May, 2020 – Somali Media fraternity* vehemently condemns in the strongest terms possible the assault and the injury on female journalist Safiya Aden Osman, a reporter for Shabelle TV and her cameraman, Abdulkadir Ga’al by Waberi District police and District Officials in Mogadishu on Monday 04 May, the latest in the string of violence against media professionals in Somalia.

A group of police and district officials assaulted and injured Safiya and beat her cameraman Abdulkadir while covering a protest by a group of internally displaced (IDP) women who complained against mismanagement of food distribution cards in Waberi District.  According to Safiya, the officers hit her with metal object resulting head injury. She was admitted at the hospital while bleeding and was later discharged.

The officers also confiscated the journalists’ equipment.

We condemn this latest attack on the two journalists that follows a day after the Somali media advocates: FESOJ, SJS, SOMA and SIMHA submitted an official protest letter that documented key violations against press freedom to the Offices of Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmaajo), Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Khaire and Minister of Information, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye).

We are extremely worried by the increasing intolerance of the Somali authorities and the use of violence by its security forces against journalists reporting from certain public interest news incidents.

We call for the Somali Government to urgently investigate the officers responsible for the Monday’s physical attack on Shabelle TV journalists and bring them to book. We also remind authorities that no official is above the law and therefore perpetrators of this attack should not go with impunity.

Meanwhile, we are dismayed by the new threats by the Somali Prime Minister’s Communication Office against our media organizations and journalists following our joint call to end violence against media professionals on the World Press Freedom Day on Sunday.  We call for Somali Prime Minister to urgently take appropriate and relevant actions to ensure the safety of our staff and journalists amid the very highly dangerous level of threats coming from his Office.
