MOGADISHU, Somalia 9 April, 2022 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and the Somali Media Association (SOMA) are concerned about the detention of freelance journalist, Abdisalan Ahmed Awad, who is held in undisclosed location by Somaliland intelligence service since 3 April 2022, and the sentence of a year in jail against another journalist, Ahmed Jama Hersi over a critical Facebook post.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 10 March, 2022 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and the Somali Media Association (SOMA) condemn the restrictions and blocking of independent media and journalists seeking to observe and report on the process of the indirect elections in Somalia; and express serious concern at the repression and threats against journalists dealing with allegations of irregularities, harassment of candidates and looting of seats in Mogadishu and in the federal Member States.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 20 February, 2022 – The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) has officially joined the United Nations Civil Society Coalition on Anti-Corruption Convention, as part of SJS efforts to defend defends journalists’ rights and promote accountability for violations against media freedom including attacks on journalists covering corruption.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 15 February 2022 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) concluded on Monday 14 February, 2022, a three-day human rights journalism training in Baidoa. The training was attended by 22 journalists (9 female and 13 male) from independent and state-run media in South West State of Somalia.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 09 February 2022 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and the Somali Media Association (SOMA) jointly welcome the United States Government's decision on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 to impose a visa ban on ‘current or former Somali officials or other individuals who are believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Somalia, including through violence against protestors, unjust arrests or intimidation of journalists.

MOGADISHU, Somalia 02 February 2022 – Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and the Somali Media Association (SOMA) calls Galmudug authorities to investigate its Darwish police force for the raid on Sooyaal TV and Radio, a local independent media station in Abudwak town, Galgadud region, and beating and detaining its director Mahad Bashir Osman for interviewing a group of police officers who went on strike on Sunday due to unpaid salaries.
